promethazine hydrochloride and codeine phosphate

promethazine hydrochloride and codeine phosphate is a pain reliever that belongs to the opiates family of drugs. It’s used to alleviate pain after an operation or an injury, for example. It’s also used to treat chronic pain when over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol, ibuprofen, and aspirin haven’t worked. Diarrhea is also treated with codeine.

It blocks pain signals from reaching the rest of the body by acting on the central nervous system and the brain. It also helps to alleviate pain-related anxiety and stress.

Codeine is a prescription-only pain reliever that comes in the form of tablets, a liquid to drink, and an injection. In most cases, codeine injections are exclusively offered in hospitals.

When and how should you take codeine?

Follow your doctor’s directions for taking this medication. This is especially significant because codeine has the potential to be addicted.

dosage and potency

Codeine is available in the following forms:

a liquid that you consume – this has 25mg of codeine in a 5ml spoonful cough syrup – this contains 15mg of codeine in a 5ml spoonful an injection – this contains 15mg of codeine in a 5ml teaspoon (usually given in hospital)

Codeine is usually taken in doses ranging from 15 to 60 milligrams.

The usual dosage for pain relief is:

adults – one or two 30mg tablets, taken every 4 hours, up to a maximum of 8 tablets (240mg) in 24 hours
Children (12-17 years old): one or two 30mg tablets (or one or two 5ml spoonfuls of liquid) every 6 hours.
elderly persons or those with kidney or liver problems should take one 15mg pill every four hours.

Diarrhoea is usually treated with the following dosage:

one or two 30mg pills for adults (or one or two 5ml spoonfuls of liquid)
children (aged 12 to 17 years) – one or two 30mg tablets (or one or two 5ml spoonfuls of liquid) (or one or two 5ml spoonfuls of liquid)
folks in their eighties or nineties, or those who have kidney or liver difficulties

This dose can be taken three or four times per day.

To cure a cough, take the following dose:

Take one or two 5ml spoonfuls of cough syrup three or four times a day for adults and children.

It’s critical not to exceed the recommended dosage. Take no more than four doses of codeine in a 24-hour period if you’re:

a 12- to 17-year-old child receiving a 60mg dosage
Adjustments to your dosage

If you experience negative side effects while taking codeine, your doctor may reduce your dosage.

Your doctor may increase your dose or recommend a different prescription if your symptoms do not improve.

If the dose of codeine does not relieve your discomfort or diarrhoea, consult your doctor.

How do you deal with it?

With a glass of water, swallow your codeine tablet whole. It’s best to take it with or shortly after a meal or snack to avoid feeling nauseous.

You can take codeine at any time of day, but aim to do it at the same times each day and evenly spacing your doses.

If you’re taking codeine as a liquid, it’ll come with a plastic spoon or syringe to make sure you get the right dose. If you don’t have one, ask your pharmacist for one. Do not use a kitchen teaspoon to measure the liquid because it will not give you the correct amount.

How long should I take it?

It’s possible that you’ll just require codeine for a few days. You may need to take it for a longer period of time at times. Long-term discomfort or diarrhoea, on the other hand, is usually treated with a different medication, especially if you have constipation as a side effect.

If you forget to take it, you will be fine.

If you forget to take a dose, consult the information on the package leaflet or consult your pharmacist or doctor for advice.

To make up for a missed dose, never take two doses at the same time.

Setting an alarm to remind you of your doses can assist if you forget them frequently. You could also seek help from your pharmacist on different ways to remember your medication.

If you take too much, you’ll get sick.

Even if you think the suggested amount isn’t enough to treat your pain, it’s crucial not to exceed it. If you think you need a different dose, talk to your doctor first.

It is possible to overdose on codeine. It may cause you to feel drowsy, nauseated, or dizzy. It’s also possible that you’re having trouble breathing. In severe circumstances, you may go unconscious and require hospital emergency treatment.

The amount of codeine that might cause an overdose varies depending on the individual.
