It is ineffective against viral illnesses (such as the common cold and flu). When an antibiotic is use when it isn’t need, it loses its effectiveness for future illnesses.
What is the best way to take doxycycline?
Before you start taking doxycycline, and each time you get a refill, read the Patient Information Leaflet if one is available from your pharmacist. Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any concerns.
This medication should be taken by mouth on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, usually once or twice daily, or as directed by your doctor. Unless otherwise indicated, take this drug with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters). If you have a stomach ache, taking it with food or milk may help. However, if you take doxycycline with food or milk (or anything high in calcium – see below for more information), it may not work as well, so consult your doctor.
This drug is 2 to 3 hours before or after any items that contain aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, or bismuth subsalicylate. Antacids, didanosine solution, quinapril, vitamins/minerals, dairy products (such as milk, yogurt), and calcium-enriched juice are only a few examples. These compounds bind to doxycycline, preventing it from being fully absorb by your body.
This drug is normally once a day to prevent malaria. Take the first dose of this medication one to two days before your trip, or as directed by your doctor. While in the malarious area, continue to take this medication on a daily basis. You should continue to take this medication for another four weeks after you return home. Contact your doctor if you are unable to complete this doxycycline treatment.
